Meet American Girl’s Girl of the Year 2013, Saige: A Creative and Sensitive 9-year old girl

New Mexico and American Girl dolls

I have been hiding from my blog ladies and gents. But now I’m back with more American Girl news. The newest American Girl has been discovered by clever sleuths who have gotten hip to Library of Congress, and found the synopsis for the newest Girl of the Year 2013. If you were hip to, you knew the name Saige was in the works. The two books are Meet Saige and Saige Paints the Sky.

Book Summaries

Both stories are written by Jessica Haas, a horse lover. And reading her blog on her website, she’s obsessed with them.

Meet Saige-Upset that her New Mexico school can only afford music and art teachers in alternate years, fourth-grader Saige works with her grandmother, Mimi, to plan a fundraiser but when Mimi has an accident, Saige relies on new friend Gabi to help.

Saige Paints the Sky-Painting in her grandmother’s studio and riding her favorite horse, Georgia, helps fourth-grader Saige cope with missing Mimi and sparks an idea for funding the school art program, but more creativity will be needed to keep Georgia from being sold.

It sounds like a sad story. I wonder what happened to her grandmother. This may be the first story in the Girl of the Year collection that has a deeper leaning, or more tragic lean. The historical dolls have the reputation for carrying heavier subjects, subjects that children have to ask more questions about like slavery, childbirth, death, slavery, divorce, and financial woes. I had first experience with Meet Kirsten. When I was kid, *SPOILER ALERT* I couldn’t believe a little girl had died in that story. It gave me nightmares. I had to ask grandma about it. It was a deep subject. I did everything to avoid getting that disease…Now, I understand it and realize that in the past, diseases that were common with us were harder to cure back then. I hope that the new American Girl’s story has that thought-provoking touch. It’s what makes American Girl unique. Even though Dear America is deep, it’s over-dramatic, like watching stuff on television. American Girls live average lives in those times.

SANTA FE —New Mexico Film Office director Nick Maniatis announced today, “AMERICAN GIRL: 2013
GIRL OF THE YEAR,” starring Jane Seymour (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Wedding Crashers) will be
filmed in and around Santa Fe and Albuquerque this month.
“People recognize that Albuquerque is a great place to make films, and the fact that the film’s story line takes
place in Albuquerque, and showcases our town, is an added bonus. We welcome them!” said Albuquerque
Mayor Richard J. Berry.

Alton Walpole of Mountainair Films (Longmire, Crazy Heart, The Book of Eli) states, “The story is based on
specific New Mexico locations and events and ninety percent (90%) of the crew are New Mexico residents.”
The production will employ at least one hundred (100) New Mexico crew members and at least three hundred
(300) principal and background talent.

“Santa Fe is very pleased to welcome AMERICAN GIRL: 2013 GIRL OF THE YEAR. We have worked hard
to support the film industry so that New Mexicans can have good paying jobs on this and other films in and
around Santa Fe” said Santa Fe Mayor David Coss.

The film is produced by Debra Martin Chase (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Princess Diaries) and
directed by Vince Marcello (McKenna Shoots for the Stars). The AMERICAN GIRL: 2013 GIRL OF THE
YEAR movie is about a nine-year old creative, sensitive, and apprehensive girl who is devastated when her best
friend comes back from summer camp with another best friend. She learns that the school has suspended all
extracurricular activities. A big fundraiser is organized to bring back the activities to the school. Her
misunderstandings with her peers, plus an accident that sidelines her beloved grandmother, stand in the way of
her goals. Fortunately, over the course of the story, she gains confidence in herself, embraces change, and
learns how to express her true feelings – all attributes that lead her to resounding success and renewed

Wow. Awww, so her personality is the shy type. She seems so sweet, like Josefina. Maybe it’s a New Mexico thing?

She’s probably the first Girl of the Year that begins her story as a nine year old instead of a ten year old. Maybe in her story she turns ten?

So look forward to more information about her around December 27, 2012, which is around the release of her books! It’s being filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico for those who would like to see the set…
