5 Reasons To Love Cardcaptor Sakura

18 Oct

For the past three weeks, I’ve been binge watching an old Japanese anime from my childhood: Cardcaptor Sakura. This year marks Cardcaptor Sakura‘s 20th year anniversary, and it looks like CLAMP has added a new arc to the Cardcaptor Sakura series to celebrate: The Clear Card Arc. There is also an anime project in the works. ❤ I did happen to read the first five chapters of the new arc. So far…Regrettably…I’m once again addicted. XD

Recently, I got wind that Cardcaptor Sakura had also been re-dubbed by Animax. As an anime fan, I couldn’t pass the opportunity to watch it up.

A little bit of nostalgia and a little bit of a fascination with mysteries and wonders in the world brought me into Cardcaptor Sakura in the first place. Re-watching it again, no matter how bad the dub sounds, how bad I have to focus to read subtitles, or how poor my Japanese skills are, I can’t help but want to watch and read the whole thing over and over again.

carcaptors-sakura-anime

No matter how many times I’ve watched this anime, I never get bored or tired of it. I couldn’t put my finger on it for the longest time. Why can’t I ever get tired of this anime? What about this anime draws me in every time?

Sure, there are plenty of great Shoujo animes out there. I’ve watched my share. But this one always seems to capture my heart every time I watch it. I usually consider myself tomboyish…But this anime brings out my “girlish” side (?). It’s just so darn sweet and cute. ❤

With that being said, I gathered 5 things I love about this anime and I would like to share them with you, readers, and maybe you might find you like these things about the anime too! For all of you newcomers to Cardcaptor Sakura, I recommend you give this manga/anime a try.

1 .Love Has No Definition

In the Cardcaptor Sakura universe, and fans know this, love isn’t clearly defined, isn’t one-dimensional, and it evolves. Truly, CLAMP, the writers of the source material, had no qualms with inculcating relationships that defy the traditional. In many respects, it was ahead of its time (since it did come out in the 1990s).

For instance, there is one couple in the series that consist of two teenage boys (though technically one isn’t human, but whatever). However you take their relationship, the material doesn’t hesitate to express that these two individuals love one another the most. They don’t turn this into something perverted or unaccepted. It seems to flow naturally in the story, is accepted, and is very romantic. It still carried a level of innocence that is not common with this kind of relationship. All of the relationships could be taken any way according to the reader. There are relationships between family that are highlighted to be stronger than relationships between lovers within this story. However you want to see love and romance, this story has a lot to offer.

Other relationships expressed in the story are still not considered acceptable. However, I applaud CLAMP’s bold approach to the romance genre and their ability to look outside of the box. Even with their canon romance, throughout everything, it was anything but boring.

I usually hate the romance genre. In anime especially, the love interest is usually super obvious and is developed long before the story takes off. It makes the following episodes boring. But I am completely obsessed with this story’s romance story.

2. Everything is Mysterious

I love anything mysterious and unexpected. Cardcaptor Sakura is full of magic and mystery. There was always a suspicious new character being introduced, always a mysterious card lying around, and the story behind most all of the characters are very peculiar and interesting. All of the characters could have their own spin-off series and it would be interesting. Though there was a lot of information left out, it didn’t stop the characters from growing, learning, and changing.

3. The Characters Are Layered And Evolve

Adding on from the last point, the characters are very individual, unique, and evolve. Even the characters one would think is the most stereotypical has something different happen to them that changes the character’s whole perspective on life, thus changing the reader’s opinion of them. The main character is an example of that. One would think that everyone would be in love with the main character. Isn’t that how it is in most Shoujo (directed to girls) anime? But not in this one. Though sure, everybody likes her, this character is not immune to heartbreak. And her idea of a love interest…certainly not someone people would initially think of as “love interest” material. In most shoujo anime, the main love interest is a handsome, tsundere/cheerful guy, who is usually older than the lead character. While this anime starts typically, it evolves into something entirely different…

All characters have strengths and weaknesses, annoying traits and charms. I can’t really say I hate any characters in the story.

4. The Music

This is particularly a point about the anime. The music is mystical and soothing at the same time. The scores are epic.

5. CLAMP-The Creators

What isn’t cool about an all female manga group? I’d say that’s pretty empowering. The four businesswomen who came together to make this project have managed to create a “stamp” for all of their creations. In many of their stories, there is always an element of mystery and intrigue. However, the most notably intriguing part of their animation is how similar all of their characters look. Many times, references are made regarding the similarities throughout most of their other anime and manga work. It almost seems like all of their characters are a part of one big universe and are all connected somehow.

There are four ways to get into the Cardcaptor Sakura story if you’re an English speaker: the translated manga, the Japanese anime subbed, the Nelvana dubbed version, and the Animax dubbed Version…

There are typically two arcs: The Clow Card arc and the Sakura Card arc. But, in the anime, they are covered by 3 seasons with 70 episodes in total. With the new Clear Card arc, there may be more. There are also two movies for the anime series.

The manga is the original source material. NONE of the animes are super close to the original story in the manga, not even the Japanese anime, aside from certain key events and characters. In the anime adaptations, there were many new scenes, extra cards collected, and new characters that weren’t in the manga. At the same time, the animes equally left out other interesting scenes you can only find in the manga. Still, the animes added all the main characters and the most important card scenes.

The Japanese anime was the first adaptation of the manga. You can watch this version with subtitles now.

The Nelvana dub changed the feeling and tone from the original Japanese anime. The cast sounded more “American” (with popular American names and customs replacing Japanese names and customs) and there are hardly any Japanese undertones. Many scenes were edited and chopped up, the opening and ending songs were changed, and the title was changed to Cardcaptors. Season 3 never aired on tv in some countries, so it may all be new to some Cardcaptors fans. They can be found online and in DVD sets. This anime was meant to appeal more to boys as well as girls. I enjoy the dubbing and music on this version. It feels more natural to me (and less cutesy 😉 ). It may be because I’m American and I started with this version. XD

The Animax version was meant to be the direct dub of the original Japanese anime. It does a decent job, but some parts aren’t completely dubbed, for whatever reason…

My advice is to read and watch whichever suits your fancy. I’ve found charms in all versions. ❤

Fans can also look forward to a new chapter in the story! I’m both excited and exasperated. I do love this anime and used to want to know what happened next. But I’m afraid that the anime will outwear its beautiful simplicity. I really liked where the manga and anime ended and I’m afraid things may be ruined or may turn sour with more added to the story. One thing that has ruined other anime and manga was having too many episodes and volumes. Everything must find an ending. I feel that this anime will be more of a gem where it’s at. At the same time, I wasn’t satisfied not seeing the rest. So maybe just one more arc would be fine…

I’ll tell you this…I don’t want to wait two more years before the anime is released. I hope the manga and anime are released simultaneously. I’m too excited! XD

Leave me a comment and let me know what you think! Have you watched this anime before? Do you agree with my reasons? If you love this story, what are your reasons for loving Cardcaptor Sakura? Do you plan to watch and have any more questions? I’m open to any discussions.

VIZ Media Stops DCTP Translations and Scans of the Manga Detective Conan

24 Jul

So I go on DCTP.ws to get my dosage of Detective Conan to find this:

dctp

VIZ Media sent a notice to DCTP, The Detective Conan Translation Project,  an online message board for Detective Conan fans, telling them to stop scans and translations because apparently VIZ owns the “rights” to Detective Conan. DCTP was known as a website that translated the Detective Conan manga, and at one time anime, for English-speakers, since most English-speakers had no manga complement as decent as the Japanese version. DCTP drew in fans from around the world. The team was very dedicated to their job of translating, even though many had other things to do. They were greatly appreciated. The same outrageous thing happened when SOPA and PIPA cracked down on pirating movies and shows on the internet, and so DCTP had to cease their translations of the Detective Conan animes. I was alright with that as longs as I was able to read the manga. And there wasn’t an English anime airing on my t.v. And I certainly don’t want that trash, Case Closed, ever airing on Cartoon Network again. In fact, there was never a good English anime complement to the Japanese version. DCTP’s manga scans helped that. But then VIZ just had to drop the bomb.

Here’s my thing. Why now, of all times? DCTP has been around for YEARS, and they choose now to say something? VIZ Media, if you own the rights, why haven’t you been doing your job of translating the manga at the same pace as the Japanese version? I am sure DCTP wouldn’t have translated the manga had there actually BEEN some decent mangas for them to read in ENGLISH! DCTP did a better job of releasing the English scans in a timely fashion, nearly matching the timing of the Japanese manga, and they weren’t even getting paid! VIZ Media is SLOW and PATHETIC.

I don’t speak Japanese, and I don’t READ Japanese. I appreciated a website that provided a decent, well-translated manga. VIZ Media is GARBAGE. They do not know how to make good dubbed material. They translate the mangas they want to translate, and if it doesn’t give them the satisfactory number of sales they want, they will cease translation altogether. That was a perk I will sorely miss from DCTP. They were loyal, hard-working fans that would never stop translating because they enjoyed reading Detective Conan themselves and made a hobby of sharing it with other international fans.

VIZ Media never cared about manga and anime fans. All they care about is making money from anime geeks. They hope to make a profit from this. But sadly, they won’t. You know why? Because their translations are 10 years behind JAPAN’S! Over half of the English audience is 10 years ahead of VIZ Media in the story. By the time VIZ Media chokes up the most up-to-date file, English-speaking fans will more than likely just give up on the series altogether. And by that time, Japan’s version will probably be OVER! DCTP was up-to-date. VIZ Media fails as a company altogether. I understand VIZ is a company and has to make money to eat, but they don’t put the same effort behind Detective Conan that DCTP did, and that’s the truth.

Another crappy addition to VIZ Media’s version is the SCREWED title, Case Closed. Why couldn’t you have used the ORIGINAL title, Detective Conan, VIZ Media? I understand that there’s a show that already has rights to the name “Conan”. But couldn’t you have called it Detective Kudou instead? Let’s also add the fact that Ran’s name is RACHEL and Shinichi’s name is JIMMY! Why those changes? Oh, why! Why is my worst nightmare coming true! Most of the cast’s names have been changed to sound more “American”, and it’s horrifying. The Detective Boys are the “Junior Detective League”, Mouri Kogorou is RICHARD MOORE, Ai Haibara is VI GRAYTHORN (WTF?) and Heiji is Harley Hartwell! Oh, just shoot me! Shoot me now!

I might not be buying or reading another Detective Conan manga until File 84 comes out in English. And when will that be? Another FOUR YEARS? This is the most disappointing news I’ve received! And when I do get it, I won’t be reading about Shinichi Kudo. Oh no. I will be reading about Jimmy Kudo! ARGH! The agony! I can’t even cringe my way through that!

I’m also reflecting on all of the Japanese cultural moments that were so eloquently translated by DCTP. VIZ Media just loves to take Japanese tradition and culture, and STOMP America all over it! They butcher over half of their mangas to make it more “understandable” for international audiences, and it just usually ends up a pile of train-wreck! They never translate the volume almost EXACTLY like the Japanese manga, and certainly not the way DCTP did. VIZ translates, omits, and re-writes everything! They are likely to change a popular Japanese board game into checkers! WHY! Please tell me this isn’t so! I knew this was coming one day, but I guess I wasn’t as prepared as I thought for this day. I count it as a lost in my manga world.

For people around the world who don’t have to deal with VIZ, you are fortunate.

I think this is probably the worst news I’ve heard this month…

No, wait. f(x)’s schedule for this week and next week have been wiped clean. Today is not my day…

Kingdom Hearts III Trailer REVEALED!!!!

15 Jun

Look at my background and you know I’m a major Kingdom hearts fan. Unfortunately, I’ve been behind on my Coded and Dream Drop Distance game. But, after a LONG wait, the trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3 has finally been revealed! It’s still under development but so far it is SICK looking. Note: LOOKING. Remember KH II? It LOOKED cool, but reneged on the story development. Spike TV’s E3 show revealed it THIS WEEK!  How could I have missed that? Maybe because I hardly watch tv anymore…

If you don’t know what Kingdom Hearts is, you were probably born in 2007…Or you’re not a gaming fan.

The story combines the forces of Disney and Square-Enix. When it first came out, most people thought it was a joke, some crazy fan fic, and no one thought it would sell. This game showed how two very different companies can join forces and create a spectacular development. Kingdom Hearts was the first video game that brought to life several movies at once, and it still is. It had the coolest graphics back in the day.

It was a good idea because it brought in both fanbases. It was attractive to kids, and equally fun for adults, and nostalgic for Final Fantasy fans. It was breath of fresh air for the FF series.

The story follows a boy named Sora, and his friends Kairi and Riku, who wanted to travel worlds when one day their island was swallowed up, and Sora ended up in another world. There he meets Donald and Goofy as they search for their King Mickey. Sora realizes that he’s also separated from his friends, and so joins them to find his friends, traveling from Disney world after Disney world.

This trailer brings me back to my memory of when I first got this game.

When I was younger, I first saw the trailer on Disney Channel. I used to watch Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Disney Channel. It came out when I was in 7th grade. I was 12 years old. I first saw the behind the scenes on Disney 411 (before it became Disney 365). It captivated me, but I hated asking for things in my household. Then as a flipped the channel to Cartoon Network, the commercial came on with the Utada Hikaru song playing. It was soooo catchy, and I saw all the Disney characters. Then it showed up on Toonami. Then more commercials. So many commercials that I memorized the commercial’s song. One day, my mother was EXTREMELY sick. My uncle came to visit. He asked what we (My sister and I) wanted to cheer us up. We were thinking, not sure. We just said, “uh, Kingdom Hearts?” At first, my uncle tricked us by saying he was just kidding and that he’s not getting us a game. We were disappointed but we put it at the back of our minds. That night, he came home with the game. I remember turning on the PS2. I remember putting in the game. I remember pressing START. I remember seeing that same opening, that song, that was in the commercial, and they had the lyrics in the booklet that came in the box. And since, my gaming world had changed. I was so obsessed with that game, I talked to all my friends about it, both girls and boys. At the time,  7th grade girls didn’t seem interested, and called me a loser. But it’s cool. I found out my freshman year of college, one of those girls became a MAJOR Kingdom Hearts fan after hearing me talk about it so much! In college, I tried to play it cool. “Oh no, I don’t play it as often because I’m so busy now.” When she looked disappointed, I got quiet. She said, “Well, now I’m a major fan.” I felt ridiculous for trying to be something I’m not. See? That’s a lesson kids: embrace yourself.

So, yea, get to the trailer already, right?

Most of you will be happy to know that this is will be released on the XBox 1. YAAAAYYY! The problem is everything has to be downloaded. What if the server crashes? Also, it will be released on the PS4. Didn’t I tell you they were waiting for a new gaming console? If you don’t remember my last article on DDD…PS4 is on my wishlist to myself.

https://soratothamax.wordpress.com/2011/02/10/kingdom-hearts-3d-dream-drop-distance/

But who wouldn’t prefer to play it on a new console? Hopefully, this means KH III is coming soon.

I hope I’m not too late on this. But I’m glad I spotted it!

Since I didn’t see the E3 myself, shucks, I will post a review from one of my favorite Youtube KH fans, Neogamespark.

The Avengers

6 May

A tin man who flies in a futuristic suit named Iron man…

A walking zombie with his flesh still in tact named Captain America…

A massive, bulky, girl-sweeping, norse God of thunder (scary), who speaketh weird named Thor…

Oh wait! There’s a girl hero in this movie! Wow! Where was her movie in the last couple of years? Meet the Black Widow…

A Robin hood guy named Hawkeye…

And it doesn’t matter if you’re white, black, or green, you can still be a super hero, like the Hulk…

Wait…the black guy was nick fury?

Yes, this movie brought together a mash up of super heroes, specifically chosen members, to be in  the Avengers movie. Mostly the ones in the movie were the ones who already had movies, all except the Black Widow and Hawkeye.

The movie was action-packed. What do you expect out of a super hero movie? And we’re not just talking about fights against the one main villain (yes one, and not one from every story), but a marvel vs marvel thing pops out once in a while.

To add there were TONS of laughs from every corner. And I’m always the person that gets all of the jokes, even from the lamest characters, so I admit I was laughing at all of the parts no one else was laughing at…

So anyway, had a blast! This is a movie to see more than once! Excellent for the whole family! It seemed everyone was at the show at the same time.

Oh and by the way, the whole story is centered around finding a blue block of ice (cough cough) if you saw Captain America, you know what I’m talking about.

I don’t do “Adult” Stuff. I’m Just a BIG KID.

10 Feb

So recently I was attacked by my mother who feels that instead of doing the “adult” stuff she used to do in the ’80s, I enjoy stuff for kids. She tacks all kinds of “mental” disorders to my enjoyment of video games, toys, cartoons (Japanese anime, I try to explain the difference), sometimes reading children’s fiction and manga/comic books, and playing laser tag at my local bowling alley. Don’t get me wrong, I go to clubs to buy $10 dollar drinks. I’ve only been to one concert, and that was for Utada when she was in town. I prefer to spend my “happy time” doing things I love. I hang with friends, but I’m not always under them like she was. I need my space for introspection and relaxation. My more extroverted mother doesn’t get that. She can’t really understand people who think differently from her. Just like she can’t really understand my love for ALL KINDS of music. Every time I listen to rock music, or K-pop, I’m considered “weird” or demented because I’m a black girl who doesn’t care about Beyonce or the latest in wack rap music. I’m tired of being called the next Michael Jackson and  I’m tired of being pinned with the Peter Pan syndrome.

Not to unload my familial issues on everyone, because that’s not the point of this article.

The point is it’s ridiculous how there’s this “code” that defines you as an adult. Like you have to make these certain “rites of passage” to be considered a successful adult and your own personal quirks are not included. You’re not allowed to like what you like, regardless if what you like is timeless and wholesome. It’s as if what I like harms anyone, which it doesn’t. I do enjoy doing adult things like taking vacations, spending extra time with a lover, and partying all night, but why can’t I also enjoy a good Disney movie, an interesting video game, and a well-made toy also? I feel people who let go of their childhood interests are only making themselves older. Some of them even look older. My uncle gets the same hounding, and he’s 10 years older than me! He was working on being an entrepreneur, and what did my family tell him? Get a real job.

The thing that really fires me up is when people want to pin immaturity with interests. I always thought one’s “actions” defined maturity. And I can name many people who do “adult” things irresponsibly. Like drinking and driving…To me, THAT’S immaturity. Or drinking so much that you miss work altogether…Recently, something like this happened on youtube where a girl age 17 attacked my channel saying that I was in my 20s and liked kiddie things, calling me immature…but what kind of action was that?

To me, we are living in the 21st century and all kinds of “old” and  “outdated” rules are being demolished, especially the societal behavioral standards that are just outright dumb.

What “rites of passage” am I talking about? Some are very important, but some are downright stupid.

1) By age 8 you should know how to ride a bike and should know how to clean a home.

2) By age 12 you should have had a crush or boyfriend/girlfriend

3) By age 14 you should no longer be playing with toys (not even looking at them)

4) By age 17 you should have your driver’s license, and should be full-bodied

5) By age 25 you should have a job, college experience, or marriage with kids, and this is where you shouldn’t have time for cartoons and video games.

Well, I have a job and college experience, but I still like what I like. And what I choose to do with my money and time is my choice. Ya know, it’s as if  people don’t like to see others happy. When they’re miserable and lonely, they want you to feel their unhappiness.

BTW I can’t stand my family.

So have any of you had this experience where you’ve been pinned with the Peter Pan syndrome? Leave a comment and let me know! Shout out to all of my Big Kids!

Japanese Drama Day-Iguana no Musume and Kimi wa Pet

15 Jun

Two Excellent Dramas to watch:

1. The Daughter of Iguana (Iguana no Musume)

This drama is about a girl named Rika who was born to a mother who found her daughter to look like an ugly iguana since birth. Having convinced herself that she is ugly and unlovable, Rika struggles throughout the drama to open up, find happiness, and love herself.

A really good drama. For all of you people who watched it my comment is below:
Is it just me or are the people in this drama poor drivers? Or either the doctors are just not very advanced? Or these people really don’t look both ways before they cross the street? Or these people trip an AWFUL lot? Or the ground in this drama must be slippery?…So anyway, yea, just an inside thing I thought about after watching this drama.

This is not for people who are looking for a good laugh or some intense action/adventure. But it’s appropriate for all age groups.

2. You’re My Pet (Kimi wa Pet)

Ah, a breath of fresh air from the original drama, right?

This one is about a highly successful business woman who struggles to find love in a man’s world. She has personality quirks that most men wouldn’t find attractive, such as smoking, watching wrestling, and reading shonen manga. One day, she finds a man outside her door who is homeless. The Lottery: Annihilation of the Weakest Link

The Lottery---will you be stoned next?

Ever feel like you’re not wanted around when you walk into a room? Forum? Facebook page? Youtube commenting section? I’ve had that feeling recently, and it was no mere intuition, it was complete clairvoyance of the situation. I walked into a Detective Conan forum about several months ago, and me being me, I went into the General Discussions area to chitchat. I had just started back up watching Detective Conan anime, and was on the DCTP TV (Detective Conan Translation Project Television) watching it, which was great. But it suddenly stopped. And so I mosied my behind over to the DCTP website. Well, I like forums generally. It’s an interesting way to connect with fans, though a great majority of the time I get banned for double posting in my excitement, being “too mean” in a debate, or simply “having two accounts” because I am an identical twin, and apparently in the world, twins are the same person now. So there is no way of knowing if the two accounts are the same. Though wouldn’t that apply to anyone even if they weren’t an identical twin? Anyway, recently I was banned from the DCTP forums now. And because Well, yes, people didn’t know whether I was one account or another. And yes, my twin sister can be a troll when it comes to things she doesn’t care about. But that is not the the REAL reason we were banned. I know. I actually felt it.

On those forums, I am the type of person who seems to disagree with whole populations of people, especially people in authority. I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’m black, and black people seem to have that bad. But in this particular forum, I strongly disagreed with the canon couple of the anime. Well, you know how large anime canon-couple boards can be. And trust me, most of the mods were on there, as strong fans. Me, being a newbie, I spoke my piece. Of course, they didn’t like it. Well, later on my sister also joined the boards. I suppose people felt we were like backyard bullies by then, scheming to gang up on them to “argue” the point. Though my sister was just simply there to make fun of them because she doesn’t take this anime seriously, different from me.  So, about three (my estimate) decided they would eliminate the problem: Me. I always seemed to disagree with the mods and other “important” figures on many parts of this particular anime. My sister only showed up in General Discussions. I was all over this board, probably the only board I actually went on frequently. I mean, giving it it’s props, it’s an organized board, they got their ship together. And the forum mod is cool as hellsing.

But these three decided, they would get me banned. No, they not only planned it for just a month but for awhile now. One even PM-ed me and I had to tell him off. And one stalked me in the forum trying to find anything on me that would get me kicked out. Eventually, those two cooled off because I showed them my fb…and they realized I was an identical twin. But there were still two leeches, and I know who they are. One is a serious Ran fan, and one is an obvious and complete enemy. They may or may not be mods, but they certainly DID NOT want me around to stop them from being Know-it-alls. I used to post long paragraphs like I do here. And it would be legit arguments. I suppose they didn’t like it. So instead of bravely coming up with a good debate to counter-argue, they decided, “We’ll just eliminate the person making us look bad”.

They decided they were going to tell the Mod just how I was “sock-poppeting” with two accounts. Now, I wasn’t worried because I knew that I wasn’t doing this. But I suppose when the majority is great in power and targets the threat, the king has no choice but to go with what the public wants: eliminate the weakest link. Thus, we have the Lottery. If you haven’t read that story, it’s a good read. A Jewish woman wrote it, how she was targeted for being Jewish and not celebrating Christian Holidays or doing normal traditions. The story is very real. When you are the only one who seems to be different, you will be targeted, especially if you are not afraid to stand up for yourself or speak up. Even at the cost of being hated. You are not afraid to choose a side, not in fear of being disliked for having opposing views.

So if it was about me spamming, or my sister, I would accept, but because it’s not, I refuse to go back. The odd part is, for three months I had the feeling they didn’t want me around. They would always comment back saying stuff like “Do you even read/watch this anime?” or “Yea good to see you soragirl6, I mean soratothamax” or “Came back to give faded logic”? and two of the three times, I ignored it. But apparently, the duo has won, and I, the victim of the lottery has the red token. I was stoned. What do I do?

1) I refuse to go back to the forums, even when the ban is lifted, giving them EXACTLY what they wanted. Not to be around people who won’t accept me, and to have anyone who wants to talk to me come find me.

OR

2) I go back to the forums when my ban is lifted to show them that it didn’t bother me, and that I’m still going to be me, and that I’m not going to let the ruin my fun.

Which is better?

Have anyone else ever felt this way or has anyone else had to decide between the two? Which do you think I should do?
